25th June - 7th June 2013 - Holy Island - Gospels on the Grass -
Celebrating both the Festival of the North East and the display of the unique Lindisfarne Gospels at Durham Cathedral during the summer, we highlight the place of origin of the famous Gospels with a magnificent piece of land art. Specially commissioned for the setting of the Priory, the lawn will become the canvas for an artistic response to the incredible use of colour and intricate design in the ancient Gospels. This static display will be an eye-catching and emotive visual feast. Come and enjoy the spectacle on the authentic site of the Lindisfarne Gospels and experience the serenity of the intimate ruins. The artwork will be installed on site from Tue 25h June – come and see the artist at work, who will make time to answer queries as he sets about creating the piece.
29th June 2013 - Holy Island - 'A Lindisfarne Gospel' - The Alastair Anderson Band - Performances at 2pm & 4pm. Alistair has drawn on the roots of Northumbrian tradition to create a new work celebrating the Lindisfarne Gospels and that corner of the north which nurtured them. The interweaving knot work of the ”carpet pages” is reflected in intertwining musical textures featuring fiddles, harp, concertina, cello and Northumbrian pipes and the wide skied landscape of Lindisfarne is echoed in emotive slow airs. The concert will include some of the traditional music which underpins this exciting new composition.
29th June - 30th June 2013 - Holy Island - A Monks Tale - Guided Walk - Throughout each day our costumed medieval monk tells stories and tales from the time of the Gospels creation.
